Cancel where the charge is billed, not where you watch, read, or use the service. Find the receipt or statement descriptor, sign in to that billing account, turn off renewal, and save the confirmation. These are the direct routes for Apple, Google Play, PayPal, Roku, Amazon, and Microsoft.
The rule: follow the receipt
One service can have several billing owners. The same streaming app might be purchased on its website, in the App Store, through Google Play, as a Roku subscription, or as an Amazon Prime Video add-on. Each route has a different control panel. Search your email for the exact amount and renewal date, then check the full card descriptor. The account named on the receipt is the place to start.
Apple subscriptions
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions, then choose the subscription.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and follow the confirmation steps.
Apple says that if there is no Cancel button or the page shows an expiration message in red, the subscription is already canceled. If the plan is missing, search email for "receipt from Apple" or "invoice from Apple" and check which Apple Account made the purchase. If there is no Apple receipt, another company probably billed it. Refund requests for eligible Apple-billed purchases go through reportaproblem.apple.com.
Google Play subscriptions
- Open Subscriptions in Google Play using the Google Account that made the purchase.
- Select the subscription and tap or click Cancel subscription.
- Follow the instructions and save the resulting end date.
Uninstalling the app does not cancel its billing. Google says access usually continues for the time already paid after cancellation, subject to the subscription type. If the subscription is missing, switch between Google Accounts. Use Google Play's official refund-request flow for a recent charge and review the policy that applies to the purchase.
PayPal automatic payments
- In PayPal, open Settings and choose Payments.
- Open Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments.
- Select the merchant and cancel the automatic payment.
PayPal's page also shows the merchant's contact information. Cancel the service with the merchant as well, because removing the payment permission does not necessarily terminate the underlying subscription agreement. Keep the merchant cancellation and PayPal cancellation together.
Roku subscriptions
- Go to my.roku.com/subscriptions and sign in.
- Under Active subscriptions, choose the plan and select Manage subscription.
- Select Turn off auto-renew and keep the confirmation.
On a Roku device, highlight the app, press the Star button, and look for Manage subscription. Only plans managed through the Roku account appear in that list. Roku's official help page routes some services to the provider even when a Roku descriptor appears, so follow any provider-specific direction shown in your Roku account. A subscription bought directly from a streaming service must be canceled with that service.
Amazon memberships, channels, and recurring payments
Amazon has more than one subscription control panel, so identify the type first:
- Amazon memberships and digital subscriptions. Start at Your Memberships & Subscriptions in the Amazon account that made the purchase and open the plan's management controls.
- Prime Video add-on subscriptions. In Prime Video, open Account & Settings, choose Subscriptions, find the add-on, and select Unsubscribe. Amazon shows the end date during confirmation.
- Amazon Pay merchant agreements. Open Amazon Pay Activity, choose Merchant agreements, open Details & Support for the merchant, and cancel the agreement. Cancel with the merchant too because ending the payment authority does not necessarily end the service contract.
Microsoft subscriptions
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the account used to buy the subscription.
- Find the subscription and select Manage.
- Select Cancel, which may appear as Upgrade or Cancel, and complete the instructions.
Microsoft says that if you see Turn on recurring billing instead of a Manage or cancellation control, the plan is already set to expire on the date shown. A Microsoft product bought from Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or another retailer must be managed by that seller. Microsoft's cancellation flow shows refund eligibility for applicable subscriptions, but not every cancellation results in a refund.
If none of the platforms shows the charge
Search every inbox for the exact amount and date, check alternate and family accounts, and open the full transaction details in your bank or card account. Ask the issuer for the complete merchant name if the descriptor is still unclear. If you truly did not make or allow the purchase, report it to the issuer immediately rather than trying random cancellation sites.
A cancellation is finished when the billing is off
Save the screen or email that names the subscription, last date of access, and next billing status. Then check the following statement. Steward identifies which platform owns each recurring charge, navigates the supported cancellation route, and records the merchant response and effective date in Work. If an account is connected, it can flag another charge after cancellation.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know which company bills my subscription?
Check the receipt first, then the full descriptor on your bank or card statement. Search every email account you use for the amount and purchase date. A subscription that does not appear on the merchant's website may belong to Apple, Google Play, PayPal, Roku, Amazon, Microsoft, another account, or a family member.
Why can the app company not cancel my subscription?
If you bought the subscription through a platform, that platform may own the billing relationship. The app company may not have the ability to stop or refund a charge processed by Apple, Google Play, Roku, Amazon, or another biller. Use the account named on the receipt or statement.
Does deleting an app cancel its subscription?
No. Google explicitly says uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription, and the same billing principle applies elsewhere. Turn off renewal in the account that bills the subscription, save the confirmation, and then delete the app if you want.
What if the subscription is missing from the platform account?
Confirm that you signed in with the account used for the purchase. Search for the original receipt, check family accounts and old email addresses, and compare the statement descriptor. If the receipt names another company, manage the subscription there. If the charge remains unknown, ask your card issuer for the full merchant information.
Does turning off a PayPal or Amazon Pay automatic payment cancel the service?
It stops that payment permission, but it may not end your separate agreement with the merchant. Cancel the subscription with the merchant too, then remove the automatic-payment authority in the payment platform. Keep both confirmations.
Where do I ask for a refund after canceling?
Use the biller's refund route. Apple uses reportaproblem.apple.com. Google Play has an official refund-request flow. Microsoft checks eligibility during cancellation for applicable subscriptions. Roku, Amazon, and merchants apply their own policies. Cancellation and refund are separate outcomes, and neither approval nor a partial refund is guaranteed.
